California Vehicle Codes (VC)

The California Vehicle Code is a term used to describe a rulebook that contains rules and regulations for every aspect of owning, using, or selling a vehicle of any sort. You could purchase this 1000-page rulebook from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, but it is easier and cheaper to just search for it online for free. Some of the topics that this rulebook covers includes:

1) Registration and titling of vehicles; this part of the rulebook covers what kinds of vehicles can be registered with the DMV and guidelines to obtaining the correct title for that vehicle.

2) Anti-theft laws; this portion refers to what exactly counts as theft, which is to explain in detail certain situations such as when a company needs to repo a car. You could find out the laws about when a company can repo your car or not.

3) Driver’s license procedures and processes; these laws refer to every aspect of obtaining a driver’s license, renewing that license, how you could lose your privilege to have a driver’s license, and how to get that privilege back.

4) Financial responsibility and car insurance; this refers to car accidents and how financial responsibility is determined. This part also sets rules and guidelines for insurance companies when setting a rate to get a car insured and when they are financially responsible for the accident.

5) Rules of the Road; these are all of the driving rules and regulations that, if broken, will result in a ticket or worse, depending on the severity of the violation.

6) Towing and loading rules and regulations; this is in regards to when a car can be towed, depending on the situation. Towing regulations could be used when a car is parked illegally, needs to be transported, repoed, or if an officer needs to have a suspect’s car towed. These rules also determine what a tow truck needs to have on board at all times.

7) Transporting hazardous materials; Transporting hazardous materials is dangerous to everyone around that vehicle so there are rules that make sure that the material is transported safely to minimize the chances of a disaster occurring.

8) Off-highway/off-road vehicles; this one explains itself, it is just rules for obtaining and owning a vehicle that is not meant for commercial roads.

9) Bicycle laws and rules; These rules are meant for both man powered bicycles as well as motor cycles and when it is safe for them to drive on the road or on the sidewalk.

10) Safety Regulations; These safety regulations are general safety concerns that apply to every kind of vehicle out there.

Some example of the codes you will find in this book are:

14601.1(VC): driving with a Suspended License: this is a traffic ticket that can be charged as a misdemeanor or an infraction.

12500(VC): Driving Without a License:

23152(VC): Driving under the Influence: driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher.

All of these laws are constantly updated and any company or person that uses these set of rules must always refer to the most up to date version of the vehicle code. This ensures that there will be no confusion when referring to these rules regarding your case. Not only does this rulebook contain rules and regulations regarding owning and operating a vehicle, but it does also have rules and regulation for the vehicle itself.
